Read on for the key takeaways or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/album\/5305940\"><span>watch the videos of the talks here<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The role of HR: back to the basics<\/h2>\n<p><span>You\u2019d probably agree that HR is about more than just hiring, firing, and paperwork. With processes automation gaining traction, the role of HR has shifted. But what should today\u2019s HR professionals focus on?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s a jungle out there,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/back-to-basics-erika-enberg-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>says Erika Enberg<\/span><\/a><span>, Director of People &amp; Culture at Blacklane, about all the tools and methods HR practitioners use. Instead of putting the cart before the horse, she recommends starting with empowering great leadership. Her recipe for management success: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Read about leadership, learn about the people around you, and share your knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/3-lessons-from-pivoting-from-marketing-to-hr-michael-jones-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>According to Michael Jones<\/span><\/a><span> &#8220;nobody grows up wanting to be in HR.&#8221; Before becoming EyeEm\u2019s VP People, he thought of HR as a function that\u2019s all about processes and bureaucracy. This dated view is fading fast and more fresh approaches are revolutionizing the role. Pivoting from Marketing to HR, Michael wanted to focus on the people and keep things simple instead. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">By carefully stripping away process, \u201cdecisions have been made faster, creativity was unleashed, and you could really sense a new energy coming through.<\/span><span>\u201d So when looking at his kids, Michael today thinks that HR is something they should actually look up to because it\u2019s so central to everyone\u2019s career and life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When it comes to technology, today&#8217;s role of HR requires tech knowledge and certain soft skills. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">We need differently skilled people who are able to use and build those tools. But also people who are able to form an environment where those tools are getting used in the right way<\/span><span>,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/where-hr-recruiting-fail-and-why-we-should-turn-to-true-communication-instead-inga-holtmann-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>says new work expert Inga H\u00f6ltmann<\/span><\/a><span>\u00a0in her talk at DisruptHR Berlin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Putting the human experience first<\/h2>\n<p><span>One topic that ruled this year\u2019s DisruptHR Berlin was a people-first approach to HR. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>HR needs to take into account what people are anxious about and what their needs are. Whether it\u2019s about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.small-improvements.com\/features\/360-degree-feedback\/\">360-degree feedback<\/a>, employee surveys, or meetings. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Every time we incorporate fears and desires in our HR processes and tools, we create a more human experience<span>,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/in-search-of-the-ultimate-user-experience-joris-luijke-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>says HR guru Joris Lujike<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For Nina Butzke, In-house Trainer at Babbel, putting humans first also means letting them own their personal development. Instead of developing detailed job descriptions and predefined competency profiles, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/personal-development-made-by-hr-from-dictatorship-to-citizenship-nina-butzke-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>Nina suggests<\/span><\/a><span> that HR should trust their people. She says: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">Employees know what is best for them. Give them the freedom to figure out their own way.<\/span><span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/career-needs-today-are-like-instagram-hilary-klassen-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>According to Hilary Klassen<\/span><\/a><span>, CEO and founder of Career Ari and Quahog, the human experience already starts with the hiring process. She wants organizations to \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">stop hiring and developing based only on job role<\/span><span>.\u201d But what\u2019s the alternative? For Hilary, it\u2019s looking at a job as part of someone\u2019s career story. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna hire based on purpose, impact, feedback, and personal life balance,\u201d she predicts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/make-your-vision-relevant-sarah-guerrier-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>Sarah Guerrier <\/span><\/a><span>worked in Marketing for ten years before becoming the Head of People Operations at Zalando. One of the first things she did was find the people operations team\u2019s common\u00a0<\/span><i><span>why<\/span><\/i><span>. They quickly realized that their <\/span><i><span>why<\/span><\/i><span> was simply \u201cputting people first.\u201d To put that vision into action, Sarah introduced the <\/span><i><span>employee Net Promoter Score<\/span><\/i><span> (eNPS) as a measurement of the people ops team\u2019s success. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">It&#8217;s a powerful initiative to drive the focus and accountability of the HR team toward truly serving their people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Diversity, inclusion, bias, and AI<\/h2>\n<p><span>Diversity is a big buzzword, and many organizations focus on increasing it. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/ub-or-not-ub-that-is-the-question-inka-kretschmer-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>according to leadership coach Inka Kretschmer<\/span><\/a><span>, diversity alone is not the answer. Inka encourages organizations to \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">create an environment that is truly inclusive so that people can be who they are and successfully collaborate<\/span><span>.\u201d Without an inclusive environment, diversity can actually do more harm than good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A crucial step toward diversity and inclusion is tackling unconscious bias. Once you\u2019re stepping into realms of AI, removing bias is also prerequisite for writing successful algorithms. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 600;\">The first thing we\u2019ve got to do is make sure our data is clean, broad, and involves diverse sets of people<\/span><span>,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/disrupthr.co\/vimeo-video\/a-new-kind-of-good-bill-boorman-disrupthr-talks\/\"><span>tru founder Bill Boorman says<\/span><\/a><span>.
